Well known as an to effective advocate for Israel, the Consul General has ensured that our community remains up to date on ongoing developments in the region and has always made himself available during times of crisis. We are especially grateful that the Consul General made time for us as he constantly juggles countless media requests. Ambassador Ido Aharoni is a dear friend to New York and JCRC-NY.


July 11, 2014: JCRC-NY briefing with Amb. Alon Pinkas.

Ambassador Pinkas, who is joined us from Israel, is a leading political commentator in the Israeli and international media. He was chief of staff to foreign ministers David Levy and Shlomo Ben-Ami, foreign policy adviser to former foreign ministers Ehud Barak and Shimon Peres, and adviser on US relations to former prime minister Ehud Barak. From 2000 to 2004, he was Israel’s Consul-General in New York. He is also a fellow at the Israel Policy Forum.

July 15, 2014: JCRC-NY and UJA-Fed NY briefing with General Michael Herzog.

General Herzog, a retired brigadier general in the Israel Defense Forces (IDF), is the Israel-based Milton Fine International Fellow of The Washington Institute. Over the last decade General Herzog has held senior positions in the office of Israel’s minister of defense under ministers Ehud Barak, Amir Peretz, Shaul Mofaz, and Binyamin Ben-Eliezer. From September 2006 to October 2009, General Herzog served as chief of staff to Israel’s minister of defense. From November 2001 to July 2004, he served as senior military aide to the Israeli minister of defense. In that capacity, he acted as the liaison between the defense minister and the IDF, Prime Minister’s office, intelligence community, and Israeli defense establishment.


July 21, 2014: JCRC-NY and  UJA-Fed NY briefing with Lt. Col. Peter Lerner.

Lieutenant-Colonel Peter Lerner commands the international media department of the IDF Spokesperson’s Unit, as well as directing the unit’s online presence, social media, visual platforms and websites. A career officer, he has been involved in media, public affairs and foreign relations for the past 20 years. He has previously served as spokesman for IDF Central Command and as spokesman for the Coordinator of Government Activities in the Territories. He holds a BA in Political Science from Bar-Ilan University is a graduate of the IDF Command and Staff College.

July 23, 2014: JCRC-NY and  UJA-Fed NY briefing with Maj. Gen. (res.) Yaakov Amidror.

Maj. Gen. Yaakov Amidror is Israel’s immediate former national security advisor. He is former commander of the IDF’s National Defense College and Staff and Command College and former head of the IDF’s Research and Assessment Division, with special responsibility for preparing the National Intelligence Assessment. Maj. Gen. Amidror also served as the military secretary of the defense minister. He is currently Anne and Greg Rosshandler Senior Fellow at Bar-Ilan University’s Begin-Sadat Center for Strategic Studies.

July 24, 2014: JCRC-NY and  UJA-Fed NY briefing with Talia Levanon.

Talia is the director of the Israel Trauma Coalition — the global standard-setter for trauma response founded by UJA-Federation in 2001 to help Israelis cope with violence. The ITC has been hailed around the world, from Boston after the marathon bombings to Japan after the tsunami to Haiti after the earthquake. Its trauma expertise is unmatched.

With conflict raging in Gaza between Israel and Hamas, ‘normal’ has taken on a new meaning. And it will never be quite the same again. But ITC strives to make life as close to normal as possible. With more than 30 years of experience in the field of trauma care and bereavement, Talia has represented Israel at the United Nations in forums dedicated to Victims of Terror, and she’s worked with W.H.O., U.N.I.C.E.F, and C.D.C. on several post disaster initiatives. During the Yom Kippur War in 1973, Talia served as an officer in the Israeli army, working with bereaved families and wounded soldiers, widows, and widowers.

 July 30, 2014: JCRC-NY and  UJA-Fed NY briefing with Dr. Jonathan Schachter.

Dr. Jonathan Schachter is the Senior Adviser to Prime Minister Netanyahu on international affairs. He has served in various roles in the Prime Minister’s Office. Previously, Schachter was a research fellow at the Institute for National Security Studies (INSS) at Tel Aviv University, where his work focused on terrorism and national security decision-making.

 August 4, 2014: JCRC-NY and  UJA-Fed NY briefing with Col. (res.) Dr. Eran Lerman

Eran Lerman is deputy for foreign policy and international affairs at Israel’s National Security Council.  He previously served as director of the American Jewish Committee’s Israel/Middle East Office.  Col. (res.) Dr. Lerman also served as the assistant for analysis to the deputy director for intelligence production at the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) Directorate of Military Intelligence. He was a member of Israel’s arms control delegation to the Arab-Israeli peace talks from 1992 until 1995 and frequently conducts public briefings on strategic issues.  A former lecturer at the Department of Political Science at Haifa University, he holds a B.A. in history from Tel Aviv University and a Ph.D. in history from the University of London, as well as an M.P.A. from the Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University.
