JCRC-NY Condemns Hateful Statements About Puerto Rico

October 31, 2024

10/31/24 – The Jewish Community Relations Council of New York strongly condemns the hateful and derogatory statements made by comedian Tony Hinchcliffe during a recent political rally in New York City. Among these, the remarks aimed at the Puerto Rican community were particularly appalling. For many years, the Jewish community in New York has fostered a deep connection with the Puerto Rican community, working together to build a more inclusive and equitable society. To refer to Puerto Rico—a homeland for countless New Yorkers and American citizens—as “garbage” is not only disrespectful but also dehumanizing to those we consider our valued partners.

As we approach Election Day, JCRC-NY once again urges all public officials and candidates to refrain from inserting hateful and divisive rhetoric into our political discourse and communal conversations, including labeling political opponents Nazis.  In this climate of toxic polarity, our next President – together  with all Americans – must work to unite diverse communities and promote a culture of respect, understanding, and inclusion.

Early Celebration of Rosh Hashanah: “New York, New Year, New Connections”

September 24, 2024

What a joyous celebration of Rosh Hashanah – the Jewish New Year – on the Hudson! Thank you to everyone who joined us for “New York, New Year, New Connections.”

We were honored to host Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg, Manhattan Borough President Mark D. Levine, Assembly Member Alex Bores, and NYC Council Members Shaun Abreu, Eric Dinowitz, and Susan Zhuang. Their presence and words of unity meant so much to our community.

Special thanks to our partners from UJA-Federation of New York and Based in Harlem for helping make this event truly special. It was a beautiful display of community, reflection, and hope for 5785 (2024-2025).

As we dipped apples in honey, sounded the shofar, and cast our reflections into the Hudson, we were reminded of the power of community and new beginnings. Here’s to a year of continued connection and understanding. Shana Tova!

JCRC-NY Supports the “Bring Them Home Now Rally” Opposite the UN on September 20th

September 20, 2024

September 20, 2024 – Together with the Hostage Family Forum, UJA-Federation of NY, elected officials, and many community partners, JCRC-NY stood in solidarity at Dag Hammerskjold Plaza with families of hostages and supporters to speak and declare with one voice: BRING THEM HOME NOW!

We met on the eve of the United Nations General Assembly where world leaders will soon gather and deliver remarks. Leaders will ultimately be judged NOT by speeches—but by their ability to swiftly bring home every hostage, achieve an end to this conflict, including permanently disarming Hamas, and securing lasting peace in the region for all children, families, and seniors. Over 100 hostages are still kept in captivity almost a year since Oct 7. We are not whole until we are all home.
